Rent boy is moving to London for a while. The people he was supposed to stay with are not at home. Other friends are also unavailable. At home.
One of my friends Rent boy is dying of AIDS. After the funeral, in which each of the drug addict friends remembers something about the deceased, Rent boy gets into the apartment of an unfamiliar girl. She offers "joint", but he's seriously tied up.
"Drugs seem like a terrible bore to me now; although, in fact, I'm much more bored now than I was before when I was stuck. But this boredom is new to me, and so it's not as boring as it sounds.»
He refuses and leaves. Rent boy has a new girlfriend, Kelly. She works as a waitress in a beer hall and often has to endure dirty molest customers. She remembers her boyfriend's words that all the waiters have power, and decides to take revenge on especially vile visitors. Kelly squeezes the contents of her swab them in the soup, the wine dilutes the urine and adds the calories in chocolate sauce. They eat everything. She's satisfied. Rent boy returns from London and visits the Swan, which took away the foot — he injected into the arteries and got gangrene. Despite the injury, he still wants to go to Bangkok. Rent boy, Franco, Spud and Sick boy get on the bus going to London. They're carrying a gym bag full of drugs. In London, they will sell the "powder" and share the profits. Sick boy is unhappy with the accomplices. Franco's too aggressive and scared, and Rent boy and Spud are high. Sick boy is afraid they'll get the attention of the police. Rent boy is in withdrawal again, he's pricking right in the bus bathroom, the others are getting drunk, but they won't stop watching each other. Negotiations with the London dealer is engaged Sick boy. After the transaction, the friends leave the money in the room of a reliable hotel and disperse. Rent boy is sick and he stays. With difficulty thinking what he is doing, he fills the money bag and gets out of the hotel. Putting some of the money into his account, Rent boy sits on a ship going to Amsterdam. Of all the friends he robbed, he only feels sorry for the Spud, who never hurts anyone. Rent boy understands that because of Franco's vindictive, he will not be able to return to Edinburgh.
"There he could never be anything else. Now that he was free of them all forever, he could be who he wanted to be. Alone, he will stand or die.»
Criticism enthusiastically greeted Welsh's book. He opened the abscess , which has hit the society. Some have tried to attribute to him the promotion of addiction, but the vast majority who read this novel, realized it right. This is not drug propaganda! It's how you live, if you're an addict!
